Stain & Dye
We have a variety of semi-transparent stains and dyes to choose from depending on the application. Some are solvent based and some are water based but all offer a wide variety of colors to choose from. Stains and dyes can be applied in uniform patterns or with a mottled effect similar to acid stains. Stains and dyes can be applied directly to concrete or to overlays which can provide a "like new" surface to enable the creation of beautiful new floors from old worn concrete.
Stain Versus Dye, What's the Difference?
Acid Stain
Reacts chemically with the calcium hydroxide in the concrete. Resulting colors cannot be accurately pre-determined so test samples on the actual floor are highly recommended. Final color will depend on the chemical composition of the concrete.
Water Based Stain
Absorbs into the pores of the concrete and produces a more subtle color than dyes. Light, washed-out colors can be produced with one or a few applications or darker colors can be produced with multiple applications. Some water based stains are UV stable and can be used in outdoor environments.
Dye
Unlike acid stains, which react chemically with the calcium hydroxide in concrete, dyes are nonreactive and impart color by penetrating concrete or other porous cementitious surfaces. Dyes are much smaller in particle size than chemical stains or acrylic stains, thus allowing for easier penetration and color saturation while leaving less residue on the surface. The small dye particles fill the pores of the concrete and are very hard to remove, making dyes nearly as permanent as stains. Because there is virtually no residue, minimal cleanup is required, greatly speeding the application process. Some dyes are UV stable and can be used in outdoor environments. Some dyes can provide deep, rich colors with a single application.
